RAA Liaison Letter – 2025 / 2026 Edition 53 GNR Raslan transitioned into “Alpha” Troop within 6/13 Battery and immediately demonstrated initiative and commitment to his professional development. He commenced his Employment Category Number training pathway by successfully completing a series of trade courses in succession, demonstrating a high level of dedication and commitment to his professional development. In late 2024, he elected to transition into the newly established ECN 255 – Artillery Forward Observer, reflecting his ambition to contribute more directly to operational capability. GNR Raslan continued with his professional development and undertook additional training in UAS systems. Concurrently, he has actively supported the Battery’s recruitment and engagement efforts, participating in 9th Brigade’s ARISE initiative and youth work experience programs, further demonstrating his commitment to the broader Defence community. Prior to his enlistment, GNR Raslan volunteered with the Keswick Australian Army Cadet Unit as a Defence-approved helper, primarily assisting with logistical support. Upon joining the Army Reserve, he expanded his role to include delivering military instruction and supporting cadet field exercises and camps. His continued involvement has been exemplary, culminating in an invitation from the Colonel Commandant of South Australia to formalise his role as an adult instructor under a Memorandum of Understanding between SA Cadets and the 9th Regiment, RAA. In addition to his Defence commitments, GNR Raslan has been pursuing a double degree in International Relations and Arts, majoring in History, since 2022. Despite the demands of his academic workload, he has consistently demonstrated a high level of time management and personal discipline, enabling him to meet both his educational and military obligations with distinction. Throughout 2025, GNR Raslan has proven himself to be a reliable and capable soldier, volunteering at short notice for training opportunities, supporting UAS detection operations, and contributing to time-sensitive missions such as the SAPOL missing persons search. His responsiveness and operational readiness have significantly enhanced the Battery’s capability and its support to the local community. We decided to instigate an annual award, with some distinction from the various awards currently available to members of 4th Regiment. We came up with a ‘Soldier’s Soldier’ award to be presented annually to the Soldier proposed by mainly his peers but endorsed by Commanders within the Regiment. Our award was named the Don Donkin, MBE Soldier’s Soldier Award. Don was a pre4vious RSM of 4th Field Regiment and RSM for their second deployment to South Vietnam in 1970/71. Don was also the inaugural patron of our Association and a wonderful
