RAA Liaison Letter – 2024 / 2025 Edition 65 exercise, detachments rigorously assessed the vehicle’s operational advantages and limitations. The HMT-E demonstrated distinct advantages, including its lightweight design, superior manoeuvrability when loading and unloading from a Light Littoral Vessel, enhanced situational awareness for drivers, and an adaptable air suspension system that facilitates optimal loading angles. The successful deployment of the HMT-E in live-fire scenarios reinforces its viability as a critical enabler of littoral artillery operations. Sustainment remains a fundamental consideration in prolonged littoral engagements. Each A2 echelon possesses the capability to sustain a gun battery for seven days, carrying a full replenishment of approximately 800 rounds of ammunition and sufficient fuel to support 16 vehicles travelling 100 kilometres per day. With the gun batteries organic four-day supply, operational endurance extends to 11 days, which can be further prolonged to 15 days with additional Bulk Fuel Pump and Storage (BFPS) provisions. Furthermore, the deployment of a Mobile Maintenance Facility (MMF) significantly enhances the regiment’s operational resilience by providing 24-hour maintenance support (see figure 3), including sea preparation, pre-fire checks, deep-level maintenance, and hydraulic repairs on the M777A2 howitzers. The MMF is deployable within 2.5 hours and represents a crucial capability for sustaining combat effectiveness. Ultimately, the 8th/12th Regiment has positioned itself as a highly adaptable force, capable of generating and employing a Brigade Joint Fires and Effects Coordination Centre (JFECC), Force Reconnaissance Teams, two gun batteries, and two A2 echelons to support the 1st Brigade’s operations within the littoral battlespace.
