RAA Liaison Letter – 2024 / 2025 Edition 33 WARRANT OFFICER CLASS ONE MATHEW CRAIG 9th Regiment RAA Warrant Officer Class One Mathew Craig was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia in 1995. He completed my high school education in Texas, United States of America, in 1997 and attended Community College. Warrant Officer Craig returned to Australia in 1999 and decided to enlist into the Australian Regular Army in 2001 into the Royal Australian Artillery where he was subsequently posted to ‘A’ Field Battery. Warrant Officer Craig has serviced in a wide variety of domestic appointments within the Royal Regiment and wider Army. These postings have included ‘A’ Field Battery, Australia’s Federation Guard as the Troop and Training Sergeant, 1st Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, Australian Defence Force Academy as a Divisional Sergeant, 4th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery both as Battery Guide and Battery Sergeant Major, Combat Training Centre – Live as the Artillery Observer Trainer, 7th Signal Regiment as a Squadron Sergeant Major, Master Gunner Land Survivability Program in Army Headquarters. He has extensive Royal Australian Artillery experience having been employed across all Offensive Support trades including Gunline, Command Post, Joint Fires Teams and Joint Fires and Effects Coordination Centres at the Battle Group and Formation level. Whilst at Australia’s Federation Guard, he represented the Defence Force in numerous ceremonial duties within Australia and internationally. In 2010, he was selected to undertake a privileged opportunity to be part on the Fromelles project as the Burial Commander and this remains a career highlight to date. Warrant Officer Craig’s operational experience includes deployments within Australia and overseas, they have been to East Timor with 3rd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR), on Operation TANAGER in 2002 and in 2007 he was deployed with the Ready Reaction Group, attached to 3 RAR as part of Operation ASTUTE. In 2008, he was deployed to Afghanistan on Operation SLIPPER with the Reconstruction Task Force Four as a Forward Observer and in 2011 as an Artillery Liaison Officer with 2-18 FA. 2017 he deployed to the Iraq as the Team Sergeant Major for Advise and Assist Team. In 2019, he deployed as part of Operation North Queensland Flood Assist. Warrant Officer Craig’s honours and awards include: the Australian Active Service Medal (with ICAT Clasp and East Timor Clasp), the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Australian Service Medal (Timor-Leste Clasp), Australian Operational Service Medal (Greater Middle East Operation), National Emergency Medal (Nth QLD Floods 19 Clasp), Defence Long Service Medal with first Clasp, the Australian Defence Medal, the United Nations Medal (UNTAET Ribbon), the NATO Non Article 5 Medal (with ISAF Clasp and Multiple tour indicator 2), the United States of America Army Commendation Medal. Warrant Officer Craig’s other awards includes the Infantry Combat Badge and Department of Defence Commendation – Group. Warrant Officer Craig is married to Jeni and they have two young adult sons. He highly values the time spent with his family, they enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, boating and motorcycle riding. He feels that this results in a better balance as a professional soldier. He commenced his current appointment as the Regimental Sergeant Major of 9th Regiment, the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery from 20 January 2025. WARRANT OFFICER CLASS ONE SCOTT REGAL 6th Aviation Regiment Warrant Officer Class One Scott Regal enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 09 August 1994. During his Recruit Training, he was allocated to the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery as an ECN-162 Gun Number and at the completion of his initial employment training, he was posted to 8th/12th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery.
