“The technology transfer on the program between South Korea and Australia is an important part of this program, demonstrating the close ties between the two nations,” Michie explained. “Celebrating this milestone with our government, Defence and supply chain partners in our new facility is an honour.” ********************************************************************** An L5 Pack Howitzer in action in SVN before being replaced by the M2A2. No wonder so many Gunners have hearing issues today. The Italian made L5 was initially designed for use by Italian Alpine Regiments. It was introduced into the RAA in 1961 with 103 Battery using the L5 in Malaya towards the end of the confrontation. 105 Field Battery took the L5s to Vietnam in 1965 and they did prove effective. The guns were used to support D Company of 6RAR during the battle of Long Tan. However consistent firing, especially on high charges, showed the weakness of the L5 in those conditions. The L5s were replaced by the American M2A2 during 1967 and used by the RAA regiments in Vietnam from then on. 106 Battery deployed to Singapore in 1972/73 and used the L5s to achieve their role as part of 28 ANZUK Field Regiment. The L5s continued to be used by some Reserve units and were eventually retired from RAA service in 1992.
