4th Field Regiment 'Old Boys' Association Newsletter

Enterprise was the Regiments land line telephone exchange manned by Arty Signallers from HQ Bty led by Earl Scholl. It was the link for all land line communications both internally within the Regiment and externally to other units. Enterprise was manned 24 hours a day by HQ Bty signallers. HQ Bty Q Store was run by the Battery Quarter Master Sergeant (BQMS) along similar lines to gun battery Q stores. In this case the Q store was run by Tom Beynon, assisted by Brian Maurer and Tim Makinson. They provided the necessary clothing and equipment for members of the Bty. They also ran the laundry service which saw our greens handed in and returned to us washed and sort of ironed. These guys did the laundry run to Baria. Along with various day to day tasks, HQ Bty also supplied personnel to the various Liaison teams outside the province. Several officers from the Bty also were attached to ARVN units as Liaison Officers. HQ Bty also at times, manned a perimeter strong point when the US guns or 107 Bty were deployed outside Nui Dat. HQ Bty personnel were also used to augment FO parties with the battalions or other fighting units. I trust this summary gives the gun battery diggers a bit of an insight into what happens in a HQ Bty. Would love to hear individual stories about where you worked or and stories about your time in SVN. 4 th Regiment Activities Negotiations continue with representatives from 4 th Regiment regarding our sponsorship of an annual award. I have also corresponded with the Donkin family, and they are honoured to have an award named after Don. More details next issue. This article was penned by Major Diana Jennings in Contact Magazine .
